It’s painful children from Christian homes do drugs – Esther Igbekele
Lagos-born gospel singer, Esther Igbekele, has lamented the moral decadence in the society today, saying it is painful to see children who were born into good Christian homes taking to drugs and other social vices.
She also dispelled the speculations and insinuations that she may switch to secular music due to some of the lyrics she uses in her songs, noting that she has no plan to change her style of music to secular.
According to The PUNCH, the songwriter disclosed this while speaking with Sunday Scoop, explaining that, “We live in a world where one sentence can be manipulated to give it many different meanings. For instance ‘obe’ in Yoruba can mean soup or knife. Two words may have the same spelling but different meanings. So, my use of secular words in gospel music does not mean I am trying to be carnal or drift from my original genre. It is just a borrowed language for people who like things like that to understand the message one is passing across.”
While commenting on her passion for setting the younger generation on the right path, Igbekele, who hails from Ondo State said, “I am a mother of three, and I know the kind of people my children mingle with, and the friends they keep. I tell them to be friends with some people, while I tell them to keep away from some. In today’s world, one cannot pretend not to know about the harmful things happening among the youth. It is so painful seeing children who were born into good Christian homes going into drugs and other vices.
“I usually receive calls from people, narrating their plight to me; and as a mother, I try to counsel them. Sometimes, it is not about the family the children come from, it is also about the kinds of friends they move with or the schools they attend.”
