The Northern Senators Forum has strongly condemned the killing of a group of traveling hunters in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, describing the act as tragic and unjust.
In a statement released in Abuja on Saturday, the forum’s chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, expressed deep distress over the incident.
“These individuals, who were on their way to Northern Nigeria, were wrongly labeled as Fulani kidnappers and brutally murdered,” Yar’Adua stated. “This is a deeply saddening and reprehensible act.”
The lawmakers urged the Edo State Government to ensure that those responsible are identified and held accountable.
“We strongly condemn this heinous act, which violates the fundamental human rights of the victims,” the statement read. “Immediate action must be taken to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of this gruesome murder.”
Emphasizing the constitutional right to free movement, the senators called for a comprehensive investigation into the attack. “As stated in Section 41 of the Nigerian Constitution, every citizen has the right to move freely across any part of the country,” the statement noted. “No Nigerian should be subjected to such unjust treatment.”
The forum also commended President Bola Tinubu for directing security agencies to investigate the killings.
“We appreciate the swift intervention of the President in ensuring that justice is served. This underscores the government’s dedication to protecting all citizens,” Yar’Adua added.
The senators called on Edo State authorities, security agencies, and community stakeholders to work together to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“We must foster tolerance, understanding, and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians. Such violence has no place in our society,” the statement concluded.
