Some Ondo State residents on Tuesday stormed the Central Bank of Nigeria in Akure the state capital following the rejection of old naira note by commercial banks.
Some of the residents said they are stranded and do not have a means to get basic necessities such as food stuff, transportation among others.
The report indicates that the customers who included Okada riders, Traders, workers and other residents besieged the CBN office at Alagbaka Akure to change their old notes to new ones, and to register their displeasure to activities of Commercial banks who refused to collect old notes but dispensing same old naira on their ATM.
Commercial banks have refused to collect old naira notes from customers, leaving many residents stranded as they can neither access new notes nor spend the old ones in their custody.
PunchMetro gathered that so many commercial banks are rejecting the old notes of N200, N500 and N1000 denomination in violation of the Supreme Court’s order and that of the Council of State.
The NUJ Chairman in the state, Leke Adegbite wrote;
Sad Situation……
“Commercial Banks in Akure & other parts of Ondo State dispensing old naira notes @ATM but refuse to accept it as deposit.”
“I just collected old #1000 note from First Bank Alagbaka, Ondo town ATM and they refused to collect old notes on the counter….” -Customer laments to newsmen this morning.”
