Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has kept his commitment to pay the 13th-month salary to civil servants, with payments confirmed on the evening of Monday, December 30, 2024.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, highlighted that despite an annual expenditure of ₦77 billion on salaries and wages, the state government remained consistent with its practice since 2019.
“Governor Makinde has once again demonstrated his dedication to the welfare of workers. The 13th-month salary is not just a tradition but a reflection of this administration’s commitment to rewarding hard work,” Oyelade stated.
He further noted the governor’s recent approval of an ₦80,000 minimum wage for civil servants, effective January 1, 2025, following successful negotiations with the workers’ council. With this adjustment, Oyo State will now allocate ₦143 billion annually for salaries and wages, representing an 86% increase.
“This remarkable increment solidifies Oyo State’s position as one of the top three states in Nigeria with the highest worker remuneration packages,” Oyelade added.
Oyo State is noted for having the largest government workforce in the South West, a fact that underscores the significance of these payments.
The governor had previously assured workers of the 13th-month salary during the state’s 2023 Christmas Carol Service held at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan. Speaking at the event, he reiterated his administration’s commitment to worker welfare.
“Consistent with our practice since the beginning of this administration, we will ensure that our civil servants receive the 13th-month salary as we enter the New Year,” Makinde promised.
