At least eight people sustained varying injuries on Friday when a commercial bus, commonly known as a Molue, collided with the road median at the Ahmadiya axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
The incident, confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, was reportedly caused by excessive speed and driver impatience.
Taofiq explained that the driver of the bus, with registration number KTU 801 XM, lost control while attempting to avoid pedestrians at a nearby bus stop. “The vehicle veered sharply to avoid hitting another commercial bus and pedestrians, but in the process, it crashed into the median and overturned,” he stated.
The accident left eight individuals injured, including five men, three women, and the driver, who suffered a fractured arm. The victims were promptly attended to by Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) personnel and taken to Ile-Epo General Hospital for treatment.
“LASTMA officers arrived swiftly at the scene, ensuring an efficient rescue operation. The injured were immediately handed over to LASAMBUS for urgent medical care,” Taofiq added.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the victims and emphasized the importance of traffic safety. In a statement relayed by Taofiq, Bakare-Oki urged drivers to adhere to speed limits and conduct regular vehicle maintenance.
“Motorists must prioritize safety at all times,” he said. “Strict compliance with traffic regulations and proper maintenance of essential systems, such as brakes, can prevent tragic accidents like this.”
