The Kano State House of Assembly has approved the Kano State Censorship Board Amendment Bill 2025, granting the board wider regulatory control over entertainment and media content within the state.
The bill was passed following a review by the Committee of the Whole House and a third reading conducted by Clerk Bashir Diso during Monday’s plenary session, which was presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore.
Addressing journalists after the session, Lawan Husseini, the lawmaker representing Dala Constituency, highlighted that the revised legislation strengthens the board’s oversight, particularly in registering event centers and ensuring strict adherence to Islamic principles in entertainment-related activities.
Husseini also confirmed a change in the board’s official name, now recognized as the Kano State Censorship Board, aligning with its jurisdictional reach.
“All films, series, and serials must now be censored and certified by the board before they can be aired,” he stated.
Furthermore, the law now restricts the unauthorized shooting of films within Kano State, requiring filmmakers to secure prior approval from the board.
Meanwhile, the Assembly advanced another piece of legislation, as the Kano State Water Users Association Bill 2025 moved to its second reading.
This proposed law aims to create an organized association of irrigation farmers dependent on dams and canal water, with a focus on enhancing agricultural productivity, improving irrigation infrastructure, and ensuring proper dam maintenance across the state.
