A separatist group, Militants of Ambazonia in South West Cameroon, has killed no fewer than 20 people in the Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.
A former member of the Cross River House of Assembly and a House of Representative hopeful for the Boki/Ikom federal constituency, Cletus Obun, confirmed the incident and said it happened on Sunday, according to Daily Trust.
“I can confirm that the Ambazonian soldiers crossed the Nigerian border Sunday morning to attack their compatriots who fled into Nigeria and refused to join their forces to fight.”
“They killed nearly 20. No one is sure yet if amongst those killed, there are Nigerian citizens.”
According to the lawmaker, the Cameroonians who are also fluent in the Bokye language of the Boki people have taken over the Bashu community, an area not far from Dananre, where troops of the Nigerian Army have a small camp.
The Ambazonian militants saunter into the Boki community, an area with many Cameroonian inhabitants, to cause mayhem.
Brigader of the Nigerian Army in Calabar, Captain Tope Aluko, said they are yet to confirm the incident, which happened six following a similar incident in Taraba State.
Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Bwacha, had earlier raised the alarm over the invasion of suspected Cameroonian militants who killed the village head and some other residents of the Manga community in Taraba.
The lawmaker representing Taraba South decried the Cameroonian invasion, saying it is a threat to Nigeria’s territorial sovereignty and their motives unclear.
He had said, “I rise this morning to draw the attention of our countrymen and particularly our security agencies to this unfortunate incident which undermines our integrity and sovereignty as a nation. Takum local government houses the 23 Battalion of the Nigerian Army. So, Mr President, my humble submission is that the Nigerian Army should rise to the challenge and curb this wanton territorial expansion.
“Their (Separatists) motive is yet unknown, whether they want to expand territory or lay claim for Southwest Cameroon is not yet clear.”
