Super Eagles forward, Victor Boniface, will continue his journey with Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen despite strong transfer links to Saudi Arabia, coach Xabi Alonso confirmed on Wednesday night.
The Nigerian striker had been rumored to be on the verge of a move to Al Nassr, with reports suggesting a deal worth up to €70 million ($73 million).
He even reportedly completed a medical with the Saudi Pro League side. However, the transfer ultimately did not materialize.
Speaking after Leverkusen’s 2-0 win over Sparta Prague, which secured their place in the Champions League last 16, Alonso expressed his satisfaction with Boniface’s decision to stay.
“He will train with us again tomorrow and we will talk. I am happy that he is staying,” Alonso said.
Boniface was absent from Tuesday’s training and did not feature in Wednesday’s matchday squad, fueling speculation about his potential exit.
However, with the deal now off the table, Alonso confirmed that there is no longer a need for Leverkusen to seek a replacement before the winter transfer window closes on Monday.
The 23-year-old has been out of action for the past two months due to injury, during which Patrik Schick stepped up impressively, netting 16 goals across all competitions.
Despite the competition, Boniface is set to return to the squad for Saturday’s Bundesliga clash against Hoffenheim.
Alonso believes the striker is in a good place mentally and ready to compete for his spot.
“He feels comfortable, it’s a comfortable situation for him here. He will fight for his position in the team,” Alonso added.
