Nigeria’s hopes of securing three points in their Group C World Cup qualifier were dashed at the last moment as Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa struck a dramatic equalizer in stoppage time, forcing a 1-1 draw at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday.
Victor Osimhen had given the Super Eagles the lead in the 73rd minute, expertly heading in a cross from Ola Aina.
The goal, which came after sustained pressure, seemed to have put Nigeria on course for victory.
Substitute Tolu Arokodare played a key role in the buildup, holding up play before releasing Aina, who delivered an inch-perfect cross for Osimhen to finish at the far post.
Despite Nigeria’s dominance in possession and multiple scoring opportunities, they failed to extend their advantage.
In the 83rd minute, Wilfred Ndidi wasted a golden chance after being set up by Moses Simon, dragging his effort wide.
Shortly afterward, Osimhen was forced off with cramp and replaced by Victor Boniface.
Zimbabwe nearly found the equalizer in the 76th minute when Walter Musona’s powerful shot rattled the underside of the crossbar following a defensive miscommunication.
However, they eventually capitalized on Nigeria’s defensive lapse in stoppage time, as Chirewa slipped past the backline and slotted the ball under goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to secure a valuable point for his team.
The result leaves Nigeria in third place in Group C, missing the chance to climb to second after Lesotho also salvaged a late draw against Rwanda.
The Super Eagles will now look ahead to their next fixture as they aim to regain momentum in their qualification campaign.
