Cameroon’s national football team silenced recent distractions with a commanding 3-1 victory over Libya in Yaoundé, reigniting their campaign in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Despite ongoing tensions between the Ministry of Sports and the Cameroonian Football Federation, the Indomitable Lions delivered a performance that spoke volumes.
On the eve of the match, team captain Vincent Aboubakar took a bold step, addressing the media alongside his teammates.
His message was clear—football in Cameroon was suffering from internal conflicts, and it was time for peace.
“Given the seriousness of the situation we are experiencing, we cannot remain silent,” Aboubakar stated. “These recent difficulties extend beyond sport and affect our performance and the image of our great nation. The victory on the field is the result of the coach’s hard work. Let him work in peace—especially with his assistant, who is tactically essential.”
With over a decade of service to the national team and more than 100 caps to his name, Aboubakar’s plea carried weight.
It was a rare moment where the players themselves stepped into the role of peacemakers, urging authorities to set aside their differences for the good of the game.
Making a Statement on the Pitch
Cameroon’s previous outing—a frustrating goalless draw against Eswatini—had raised concerns. But against Libya, the team responded with a focused, disciplined display.
While not flamboyant, their approach was effective and determined.
Aboubakar set the tone by winning and converting a penalty in the 27th minute. Bryan Mbeumo then doubled the lead in the 53rd minute with a composed finish, and just eight minutes later, Aboubakar struck again, securing his brace. Libya’s Ezoo El Mariamy managed a late consolation goal in the 90th minute, but by then, the contest was long decided.
The victory lifts Cameroon to within one point of Group D leaders Cape Verde, keeping their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
Beyond the three points, Cameroon’s triumph carried a deeper significance. It proved that, despite off-field distractions, the players remain united and focused. With Group D still up for grabs, the Indomitable Lions have made their stance clear: they are ready to fight, not just for a place in the World Cup, but for the stability of their nation’s football.
