The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a 65% reduction of tuition fees for the pioneer students of the two newly established universities; Lagos State University of Education, Ijanikin/Epe and Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu.
Vanguard reported that the tuition subsidy was announced via a statement issued on Wednesday, December 7, by the Special Adviser on Education to the Governor, Tokunbo Wahab.
Pioneer students of both universities were billed to pay a tuition fee of N195,000 before the governor subsidized and slashed it to N68,000.
According to the governor, the decision was in consideration of the present state of the nation’s economy and its impact on parents.
Sanwo-Olu, also reinforced his administration’s commitment to continue to give necessary support to both universities towards making them part of the best in the country.
The Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom, Oba Abdul Semiu Orimadegun Kasali, commended the governor or his kind gesture, noting that the reduction in the proposed tuition was a breather, as more parents would be able to afford to send their children to tertiary institutions.
Also, the Baale of Parafa in Ikorodu LG area, Chief Jamiu Odusanya, described the governor’s gesture as a welcome development.
While thanking the governor for assisting indigent students from humble backgrounds to meet their university aspirations, he added that the reduction would promote the growth of university education in the state.
