The Turkish defense ministry and leaders of the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq said that a group of rockets were fired in the direction of a Turkish military installation in northern Iraq, Aljazeera reported.
The attack on Wednesday, which the Turkish official stated did not result in any injuries or damage to the base, was immediately attributed to the Islamic Resistance Ahrar al-Iraq Brigade, a section of the paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq, which are supported by Iran.
The PKK maintains safe homes and training sites in northern Iraq’s Kurdish region. Turkish soldiers have conducted multiple airstrikes against the PKK.
Turkey, the United States, and the European Union have all labeled the group as “terrorist.”
Despite the KRG’s lack of public opposition, Ankara has established multiple bases in northern Iraq, to to the chagrin of Baghdad officials and some KRG members. Rocket attacks periodically target Turkish infrastructure.
The Turkish military deployment has regularly been denounced by the Iraqi government as being unlawful.
