The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged case of arson involving cattle herders accused of setting fire to a large cassava farm in Adao Village, near Alabata in Abeokuta.
The command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday, noting that authorities are working to ensure justice is served.
According to Odutola, “On February 20, 2025, Mr. Ogunbayo Adewale of Raka Village reported at the police station that when he visited his 35-acre cassava farm on February 19 at about 16:40 hours, he discovered that the farmland had been set ablaze. Additionally, some herds of cattle were seen grazing on the farm, with several cassava plants already uprooted.”
She further revealed that the complainant managed to capture one of the cows left behind by the fleeing herders and presented it as evidence at the police station.
Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer of FUNAAB Harmony deployed grassroots policing strategies to de-escalate tensions and prevent any possible ethnic conflict.
Odutola stated, “Preliminary investigations have identified the owner of the seized cow, while Mr. Adewale has estimated the damage to his farm at N27.3 million.”
The police spokesperson added that to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry, the case has been transferred to the surveillance section for further investigation and necessary legal proceedings.
Odutola reassured the public, saying, “The command is committed to ensuring that justice prevails. We urge all concerned parties to remain calm while investigations continue.”
She emphasized that the police remain dedicated to maintaining law and order, preventing inter-group conflicts, and safeguarding the rights of all citizens.
