The Senior Pastor of Kingsway International Christian Centre in London, addressed the persistent issue of land grabbing in Lagos, commonly orchestrated by individuals known as ‘omoniles.’
In a recent interview shared online, Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, argued that the problem persists largely because very few of these land grabbers have been jailed.
“There has not been many land grabbers popularly known as ‘omoniles jailed,” he said.
Pastor Ashimolowo emphasized the need for stringent action against omoniles, stating, “The day they begin to round up omoniles and throw them in jail, people will stop falling for their deceptions.”
He underscored that a robust enforcement of the law is essential to curb their activities, which often leave landowners in dire situations.
Ashimolowo also highlighted the importance of adhering to the government’s master plans for various areas in Lagos.
He noted that many land disputes and subsequent demolitions arise because people are unaware of these master plans.
He advised, “If there’s a master plan for an area, it must be communicated clearly. Let the omoniles know that if they sell land they have no right to, they will face jail time.”
Reflecting on past administrations, he mentioned that the Lagos State Government under former governors Babatunde Fashola or Akinwunmi Ambode had made efforts to criminalize the illegal sale of land by omoniles.
However, he lamented that the law was not enforced as effectively as it should have been.
“Although I think it was Babatunde Fashola or Akinkunmi Ambode government that criminalized selling land when you knew you have no rights as Omoniles but they didn’t use it,’ the cleric said.
Ashimolowo also warned landowners to be proactive in protecting their properties.
He suggested that areas marked for government use should have clear signage indicating their status to prevent unauthorized sales and avoid unnecessary demolitions.
“The Omoniles will tell govt said it owns it but we are the owners.
“What often leads to demolitions is a lack of awareness about the government’s master plan,” he said. “Landowners must ensure that their properties are properly marked to deter potential encroachment. Don’t just say that area your land is committed, put sign that shows that nobody should go.”
By advocating for stricter enforcement and better public awareness, Pastor Ashimolowo hopes to see an end to the ongoing land grabbing issues that have plagued Lagos for years.
