The Oyo State Government has issued a stern warning to waste management consultants who have failed to fulfill their contractual obligations, stating that it may revoke their contracts if the situation does not improve.
Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, made this known on Sunday after a review meeting with the consultants in Ibadan.
He expressed concern over the growing waste problem in the state capital, emphasizing that despite outsourcing waste collection to ensure a cleaner environment, several contractors have neglected their duties.
“For the last two months, waste has continued to pile up on the roads with nobody coming to evacuate it,” Mogbonjubola stated. “If things continue this way, we will have no option but to revoke the contracts.”
He revealed that the government had launched a comprehensive review of the waste management contracts to assess performance and ensure better service delivery.
The evaluation, conducted on Thursday and Friday at the ministry’s conference room, focused on key indicators such as operational efficiency, financial compliance, adherence to regulations, and sustainability efforts.
According to the commissioner, the review process is not a punitive measure but a necessary step to address public concerns and improve waste management.
“This is not a witch-hunt. It is about optimizing service delivery and ensuring that the people of Oyo State get the clean environment they deserve,” he explained.
Mogbonjubola also outlined the government’s plans to modernize waste management through innovative solutions, including smart waste bins, digital monitoring systems, and expanded recycling programs.
He assured residents that efforts were underway to clear the accumulated waste and urged them to remain patient as the state worked towards a lasting solution.
