The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has refuted claims that it accused the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria of involvement in the distribution of counterfeit medicines in the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, clarified that her remarks during a media interview on March 1 were misrepresented.
According to Adeyeye, she never alleged any wrongdoing by the PCN concerning counterfeit drug distribution.
Instead, she emphasized that the media outlet in question distorted the context of her comments.
“NAFDAC implicates Pharmacy Council of Nigeria on counterfeit medicine distribution was misquoted out of context.
“The headline is a gross misrepresentation of the facts conveyed during the press interview granted by the Director-General of NAFDAC on March 1.
“Nowhere in the interview did the D-G implicate the PCN in any wrongdoing.
“The D-G only gave a detailed legal, regulatory, and historical perspective on the roles of the two organisations in ensuring the safety of pharmaceuticals and the challenges that arose due to past regulatory inconsistencies,” she said.
Adeyeye reiterated that her focus was on strengthening regulatory measures to ensure the safety of pharmaceuticals in Nigeria, rather than pointing fingers at any agency.
