The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, has urged the newly promoted chiefs in Ibadanland to cherish and uphold the traditional values that define the ancient city.
This pronouncement came during a ceremony held over the weekend at the Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan, where two prominent Mogajis were elevated to positions within the esteemed Balogun chieftaincy line.
The event witnessed the presence of distinguished members of the Olubadan-in-Council, including Otun Olubadan, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja; Osi Olubadan, Oba Eddy Oyewole-Foko; Otun Balogun, Oba Kola Adegbola; Asipa Olubadan, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi; Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Amidu Ajibade; and Ekerin Balogun, High Chief Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin, among others.
Chief Adenrele Lekan-Salami, previously known as Mogaji Oyetunde, was promoted to the title of Ajia Balogun of Ibadanland, while Chief Adewale Abass Kadiri, formerly Mogaji Olofa Irefin, was elevated to Jagun Balogun of Ibadanland.
This promotion was in accordance with existing vacancies within the Balogun chieftaincy line, reflecting the ongoing recognition of leadership and service in the community.
The ceremony included a traditional decoration of the newly appointed chiefs with Akoko leaves, officiated by Chief Wahab Popoola Labosinde, the Oluwo of Ibadanland.
During his address, Oba Olakulehin emphasized the importance of maintaining the cultural integrity of Ibadanland.
He acknowledged the city’s rich tapestry of traditions and cultural heritage, urging the new chiefs not to overlook these vital aspects of their roles.
“I congratulate the two of you on your elevation today. You have joined the Balogun chieftaincy line,” he stated. “Ibadan has rich traditional values and a strong cultural heritage. I want you to uphold the rich cultural values and traditions in Ibadanland. You should remain good ambassadors of our traditional institution. I congratulate both of you once again.”
The Olubadan’s heartfelt message resonates with the ongoing commitment to preserving Ibadan’s storied traditions while empowering its leaders to serve as custodians of its heritage.
