The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a weather outlook predicting a mix of hazy and sunny conditions across the country from Sunday through Tuesday.
The forecast, released on Saturday, anticipates moderate dust haze and low visibility across northern regions, with varying conditions in central and southern areas.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NiMet, dust haze with visibility levels between 2 to 5 kilometers is expected in the northern region on Sunday, with localized visibility potentially dropping to as low as 1,000 meters.
In the central part of Nigeria, “sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected in the morning hours,” NiMet stated.
However, by the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are expected to impact regions such as the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa.
The southern states will also experience varying weather patterns. NiMet noted, “Thunderstorms with moderate rain are anticipated in areas such as Ondo, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River in the morning.”
Later in the day, thunderstorms are predicted to extend across most of the southern region.
The agency also issued guidance for Monday, expecting similar dust haze conditions in the northern areas, with visibility again between 2 to 5 kilometers. For the North Central, “sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected in the morning,” with thunderstorms predicted later over the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Benue, and Kogi states.
In the South, thunderstorms and moderate rain are expected in Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Lagos states during the morning, with widespread thunderstorms anticipated as the day progresses.
By Tuesday, NiMet forecasts persistent dust haze in the north, with central regions set to experience mostly sunny skies throughout the day.
Morning thunderstorms and rain are expected to resume in parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom, spreading over most areas in the afternoon.
“Dust particles are in suspension,” NiMet warned, urging individuals with respiratory issues, such as asthma, to take necessary precautions.
The agency advised airline operators to consult NiMet for specific airport weather updates to ensure safe planning.
“Strong winds may precede rainfall in areas with thunderstorms, and the public is advised to take adequate precautions,” NiMet noted, reminding residents to stay informed through their official website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
