Lagos University Teaching Hospital has clarified recent reports about prolonged power outages due to a disconnection by EKO Electricity Distribution Company over unpaid bills.
The Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Dr Ayodeji Oluwole, confirmed the disconnection but emphasized that LUTH’s backup generators and solar power systems ensured minimal disruption to hospital operations.
“Yes, EKEDC disconnected the facility, likely as part of their revenue drive where non-payment results in disconnection. However, LUTH is equipped with backup power systems, including generators and solar panels, which enabled us to manage the situation effectively,” said Oluwole.
“The main issue arose more with the College of Medicine, which shares power supply with LUTH but lacks backup power for its student hostels. Despite this, efforts are underway to resolve the outstanding balance with EKEDC. Part of the bill has been settled, and we are in discussions to clear the remaining amount,” he added.
The recent power outage primarily affected student hostels at the College of Medicine, prompting a peaceful protest from medical students.
In response, LUTH management made payments totaling N80 million on Thursday and an additional N50 million on Friday.
However, an outstanding balance of N145 million reportedly remains unresolved.
Previously, LUTH had relied on its own power plant but switched to EKEDC due to cost considerations. The current financial situation underscores the ongoing challenge public institutions face in managing electricity expenses across Nigeria.
