A Kano State High Court has set October 10, 2024, as the date for its ruling on an interlocutory application that seeks to prohibit the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from carrying out renovations at the Nasarawa mini palace located along State Road.
Since his deposition on May 25, 2024, Bayero has been residing at the Nasarawa mini palace, which has become a focal point in this legal dispute.
According to The PUNCH, the applicants in this case include the Kano State Government, the Attorney General of Kano, and the Kano Emirate Council, all of whom are challenging the Emir’s authority to make changes to the palace.
Representing the applicants, Rilwanu Umar (SAN) filed a motion ex parte on September 12, which seeks a court order to prevent Ado Bayero from proceeding with any renovations.
During the hearing, which took place on Wednesday, Habib Akilu appeared on behalf of the applicants, informing the court that the defendant was not present and that the substantive suit was ready for hearing.
Akilu proceeded to move the interlocutory application, emphasizing the need to stop the deposed Emir from reconstructing or altering the mini palace.
The presiding judge and Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Aboki, subsequently adjourned the case until October 10, 2024, for both the ruling on the application and the mention of the substantive suit.
In an earlier ruling on September 13, 2024, the court had issued an interim injunction that explicitly restrained the deposed Emir from undertaking any renovation or repair work on the mini palace, referring to it as “the property known as Gidan Sarki Nasarawa situated along State Road, Kano pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”
Justice Aboki further directed all parties involved to maintain the status quo concerning the structural and architectural integrity of the palace until the hearing and determination of the suit.
Additionally, the court instructed that all processes related to this matter should be displayed on the court’s notice board, ensuring transparency and accessibility for interested parties.
