The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, on Monday, ordered the release of 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre, as part of an initiative to reduce overcrowding in the state’s correctional facilities.
According to The PUNCH, the decision to release the inmates was based on their deteriorating health conditions and the fact that many had been held for prolonged periods without trial.
Justice Abdu-Aboki highlighted the urgent need for the release, stating, “Several of these individuals are suffering from severe health challenges, worsened by the lack of adequate medical care within the facility. By releasing them, we are giving them the opportunity to seek proper medical treatment.”
She also noted concerns about the inmates’ prolonged detention without trial, emphasizing that holding individuals without legal proceedings violates their rights and contradicts standard judicial practices.
“Many of them have been in custody for too long without facing trial, which goes against the principles of justice,” she said.
The Chief Judge urged the freed inmates to avoid reoffending and to work towards rebuilding their lives. Each of the released individuals was given ₦10,000 to cover transportation costs as part of their reintegration into society.
The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Mr. Ado Inuwa, praised Justice Abdu-Aboki’s actions, describing the gesture as both humane and necessary. “This decision not only helps address the issue of overcrowding but also shows compassion towards the health and rights of the inmates,” Inuwa stated.
He commended the Chief Judge for her ongoing efforts to ensure fairness and improve conditions within Nigeria’s correctional system.
