Three people, including a child, were killed overnight in the eastern Ukrainian region of Sumy following a series of Russian drone attacks, local officials reported on Tuesday.
According to the AFP, the strikes are part of a surge in aerial assaults that Moscow has intensified in recent months.
Sumy, which lies near the border with Russia’s Kursk region, has faced continuous bombardment since the early days of the war.
Ukrainian forces launched an offensive in Kursk in August, securing parts of the territory in their broader effort to push back Russian advances.
“Three people, including a child, lost their lives in a nighttime attack by enemy drones on residential areas,” regional authorities stated, referring to the city of Sumy.
Officials also reported that over 20 Iranian-made attack drones were downed over Sumy. Ukraine’s air force detected a total of 60 drones across the country’s airspace overnight, successfully intercepting and destroying 42 of them.
Sumy has endured relentless shelling since the start of Russia’s invasion. Although Russian forces briefly held parts of the industrial region, they were eventually forced to retreat.
The ongoing Ukrainian offensive in Kursk forms part of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s strategic plan to end Russia’s occupation of Ukrainian territory.
Despite the recent attacks, Ukraine remains steadfast in its resistance, continuing to defend its territory against Russian aggression.
