A professor of the Faculty of Law, University of Abuja, Kasim Waziri, has supported the Federal Government to completely ban the use of motorcycles aka Okada nationwide.
Waziri said this while featuring on AIT’s Focus Nigeria on Tuesday, adding that restricting motorcycles is not enough.
This is coming on the heels of the proposed ban by the Federal government on motorcycles nationwide.
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, dropped the hint on Thursday, 21 July 2022 while briefing State House reporters after a meeting of the National Security Council presided over by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to the federal government, the need to ban motorcycles across the country stemmed from the use of the two-wheeler to perpetuate insecurity and illegal mining activities.
Supporting the proposed ban by the FG, Prof Waziri said, “I am for total ban for the use of motorcycle. This government is on for over 7 years. and security challenges have been on since the commencement of this government, they’ve never mentioned about motorcycles.
“It, therefore, shows that there is a well-informed security about the effect of the use of motorcycle on escalating security situation, and when you must give government that, they have that right.”
However, motorcycle operators popularly called Okada operators under the aegis of the Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairs and Riders Association of Nigeria warned that will not only make 40 million Nigerians jobless but also create the worst monster behind terrorism.
