Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress have staged protests in several states of the country against the ongoing strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The nationwide protest organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress is in solidarity with ASUU over the strike that clocked five months on July 14, 2022.
In Lagos, protesters in their numbers stormed the street carrying placards with inscriptions such as, “Stop importation of petrol, refine the refineries, Nigeria at 60 years of independence, more hunger in the land” etc
In Ogun State, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and affiliate Unions staged a peaceful protest in Abeokuta in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of the Universities.
The protest was led by the state Chairman of the body, Emmanuel Bankole, the labour leaders want the federal government to respond positively to the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities in order to save the future of the country.
They condemned the rate at which the federal government gives approval to private universities while public universities are grossly underfunded.
The protest was supported by the members of the National Association of Nigerian Students.
In Akure, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Ondo State joined the two-day protest to call the attention of the federal government to the lingering ASUU strike.
According to TVC, members of the union are marching through major streets of Akure, the Ondo state capital, chanting solidarity songs.
The police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have deployed personnel in critical infrastructure and facilities in response to the strike.
