Gunmen have reportedly killed a staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mr. Emmanuel Igwe, and kidnapped his wife, name withheld, along the Ivo Local Government Area axis of Ebonyi State.
The victim who was said to be an Assistant Electoral Officer in Afikpo North Local Government Area, was attacked by the assailants while on his way back from Abia State.
When contacted, the State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya while confirming the incident, said it occurred on Sunday around mid-day, adding the gunmen shot the victim through his car’s windscreen.
“We have began a manhunt for the assailants. We are hopeful that they will be apprehended. The victim was shot through the windscreen of his car.“
It was gathered that the route linking Ivo axis of Ebonyi State through Okigwe has become a free zone for kidnappers masquerading as Fulani herdsmen.
It was said road users have vacated the route as they have devised an alternative route to Imo, Abia and Enugu States.
