Medical and Pharmacy students at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, will now be required to pay N30,000 to resit any exam that they fail, according to a memo issued by the university.
The memo, dated October 13, 2023, and signed by the Registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, revealed that the university’s management approved the introduction of the exam resit fee during a meeting held on August 7, 2023.
A resit examination typically occurs when a student fails a test or examination in the first attempt.
The memo, identified by Reference Number FUOYE/REG/MM/105/Vol3/409, stated, “The university management, at its meeting held on 7th August 2023, considered and approved the request for students in the faculties of Pharmacy and Basic Medical Sciences to resit for examination starting from 200 Level and above. The management also approved that the examination resit fee shall be N30,000 only per course.”
However, the announcement has sparked concerns among some students at the institution, who believe the fee is too high.
A 300-level pharmacy student, speaking anonymously, expressed dismay, saying, “I was disturbed when I heard the news. Some of us have like three courses that we have to resit. That means we have to pay like N90,000. Where does the school expect us to get the money? We need PUNCH newspapers to help us. The N30,000 per course is too much.”
Another student also shared concerns, stating, “I can’t even tell my parents this, and I have four to write. I don’t even know what to do at the moment, maybe to give up on life. I know it’s my fault that I had below 50 in the exam, but N30,000 is too much in this economy.”
As of now, no official at the university has provided further details or clarification regarding the matter.
However, a student leader, who wished to remain anonymous, mentioned that efforts were being made to reach the school’s management to address the concerns surrounding the newly introduced exam resit fee.
