The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced a temporary shutdown of Runway 18R/36L at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to facilitate essential rehabilitation work.
In a statement issued on Sunday, FAAN’s Director of public affairs and consumer protection, Obiageli Orah, emphasized that the move aligns with ongoing efforts to maintain the runway’s structural integrity and ensure continued safety.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public that there would be a temporary closure of Runway 18R/36L at Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos from the 03:00Hrs of 3rd of March 2025 23:59Hrs of 4th March 2025,” the statement reads.
“The closure is due to ongoing rehabilitation work (asphalt phase) at the A2 Taxiway-link of the runway.”
Orah reassured travelers and stakeholders that flight operations would continue seamlessly, with all flights rerouted to the alternative Runway 18L/36R for the duration of the repairs.
She also reaffirmed FAAN’s unwavering commitment to ensuring safety, security, and passenger convenience.
Meanwhile, FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, previously highlighted the urgent need for significant investment in airport infrastructure.
On January 15, she revealed that an estimated N580 billion would be required to rehabilitate aging runways nationwide, many of which have exceeded their operational lifespan.
