The Federal Government of Nigeria has begun paying the salaries that were withheld from teachers who were granted an extension of service by the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
The extension of service tenure came with new incentives such as a salary increase and an increase in the retirement age from 60 to 65 years.
However, some of the teachers who were granted the extension had their salaries withheld from 2021 until March 2023.
According to The Punch, top officials from the Ministry of Education, Finance, Budget, and National Planning have confirmed on Sunday that the withheld salaries are now being paid.
A representative of the Ministry, said, “I can confirm to you that they have started receiving their salaries. They also received the arrears of the peculiar allowances. All arrears of salaries will be paid in full.”
Confirming the news, a teacher in Ilorin, Kwara State, whose identity was not disclosed has confirmed that the withheld salaries have started being paid.
According to the teacher, they have only received the payment for April 2023, but they have been informed that the outstanding arrears will be settled.
