Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi opened the state Infectious Disease Hospital on Thursday, which was formerly the Colliery Hospital.
Nigerian Tribune reported that Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration rebuilt and renovated the hospital, adding new structures and facilities for the isolation and care of patients with contagious diseases.
This occurred as Ugwuanyi prepared to officially launch a few more of his administration’s signature initiatives on Friday to commemorate the successful conclusion of his eight-year term on May 29.
The first flyover bridge built by the Enugu State Government will be inaugurated at T-Junction, Nike Lake Road, Enugu, along with the 5,000-seat Township Stadium in Nsukka and the renovated Old Government Lodge in GRA, Enugu, which will feature a cutting-edge banquet hall.
The inauguration also includes a conference center at Nsukka with multiple halls, indoor activity hubs, and recreational facilities, as well as the recently built Nsukka Press Centre.
Additionally, it included 10 units of executive guest houses and 24 units of guest flats for routine visitors of the state government.
Ugwuanyi revealed that the ambitious and large construction and refurbishment of the building was a part of his administration’s proactive efforts of his administration as well as the commendable efforts of the multi-sectoral team on COVID-19 during the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease in the state, in 2020.
The governor said: “This hospital was established by my administration as a focal point for the treatment of all newly developing infectious public health problems. It is a trademark facility of the state government.”
The governor noted that “since the facility is presently being overseen by the office of the governor, the future administration will be in charge of the facility after it has been approved” as he donated a brand-new fully equipped Toyota Hiace ambulance to be dedicated to the Infectious Disease Hospital.
According to the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, the facility has an administrative block, female and male wards, maternity and children wards, accident and emergency unit, OPD, pharmacy, laboratory, and security/generator house, among others.
Nnaji expressed his gratitude to Ugwuanyi for adhering to his start-to-finish approach and delivering on his pledge to transform the former Colliery Hospital in Enugu to meet the challenge of treating patients with infectious diseases in the state.
The commissioner for health, Dr. Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi, thanked Ugwuanyi for his perseverance in providing for the health needs of the state’s residents, including those in rural regions, and said that the governor’s commitment to the health sector is unparalleled.
