No fewer than eight persons, including two children, lost their lives when an articulated truck conveying a 20-foot container fell on a commercial bus at the Ojuelegba bridge, Lagos State.
Punch Metro reported that the accident occurred on Sunday directly opposite the Federal Fire Station by the Ojuelegba bridge along the Ikorodu Expressway, trapping the bus driver and his passengers of about nine.
Confirming the death toll, LASEMA’ Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the one adult female survivor was rescued from the crushed bus.
Dr.Oke-Osanyintolu wrote, “After suspending the container with the aid of the Agency’s forklift and cutting off the top of the bus with light rescue equipment, a single adult woman was extricated alive and taken to the trauma centre.”
Dr. Oke-Osayintolu said the final casualty count is nine fatalities comprising of four adult males, three adult females, one boy child, one girl child, and one adult female rescued alive.
He added that the Agency’s Ambulance, Lagos State Fire&Rescue Services, Fed Fire Services, LASTMA, and the Nigeria Police have worked hand in hand to put the situation under control.
He said further investigations will be carried out by the Nigeria Police to ascertain culpability.
