A devastating flood has struck several communities in the Gumi and Bukkuyum local government areas of Zamfara State, leaving many residents homeless and displacing numerous families.
The flood, triggered by heavy rainfall that lasted from the night of August 15 into the morning of August 16, 2024, submerged extensive farmland, houses, and shops.
The National Emergency Management Agency disclosed the extent of the disaster in a post on its official X handle on Monday, August 19.
The post stated, “NEMA, Sokoto Operations Office conducted an on-the-spot assessment of several communities that were severely affected by the flood.”
According to NEMA, the relentless rain overwhelmed the region, leading to widespread destruction.
“The flood, which rendered many people homeless, was a result of heavy rainfall that fell throughout the night,” NEMA reported, adding that the disaster impacted multiple communities simultaneously, submerging large hectares of farmlands, houses, and shops.
The agency further highlighted the significant damage to property, noting, “Many houses were destroyed, many walls collapsed, and others were inundated by floodwaters.”
The scale of the destruction has resulted in a dire humanitarian situation, with displaced residents now seeking refuge with relatives and neighbors.
NEMA’s post also noted that the assessment was carried out in collaboration with the Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency, the Red Cross, local government officials, and security personnel.
