Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has announced a 24-hour curfew in Jos and Bukuru metropolis, effective midnight on Sunday, August 4, 2024.
This measure comes in response to incidents of looting by hoodlums in the Bauchi Road community and Zolo Junction.
The decision, detailed in a statement from the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, aims to enhance security and maintain public order.
“Governor Mutfwang, in consultation with state security agencies, took this decision after reviewing the actions of unscrupulous individuals who exploited the nationwide protest to unleash terror on innocent citizens,” the statement said.
It was reported that these criminal elements, armed with weapons such as daggers and machetes, broke into shops and restaurants, stealing foodstuffs and other valuables.
Governor Mutfwang stressed that the curfew is essential for the safety and well-being of all residents, urging compliance from the public.
He directed security agencies to enforce the curfew strictly throughout the Jos/Bukuru Metropolis.
The governor also warned those intending to cause further harm, stating they would face severe legal consequences.
He called on security agencies to remain vigilant and proactive to prevent any disruptions to law and order.
He expressed his gratitude to Plateau State’s citizens, particularly religious leaders, for their support of government policies, Governor Mutfwang praised their cooperation during the recent nationwide protest.
He lauded the peaceful conduct of the residents and encouraged them to continue fostering peace and unity as efforts are made to build a progressive Plateau.
