The Federal Government has introduced a 50% discount on interstate transport fares for Nigerians traveling during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
This initiative is aimed at alleviating travel expenses during the festive season.
According to The PUNCH, the announcement was made on Thursday by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Transportation, Olujimi Oyetomi, through an official statement.
“Passengers traveling for the 2024 Yuletide season will enjoy a 50% reduction in transport fares as declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.
The fare reduction forms part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to ease transportation costs for Nigerians during the holiday period.
At a signing ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Adeleye Adeoye, formalized the agreement with key stakeholders in the transportation sector.
These included the National Union of Road Transport Workers, the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria, and God is Good Motors.
“This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing palliatives that directly impact the lives of citizens, especially during a season that fosters unity and family celebrations,” Adeoye said.
Under the arrangement, passengers traveling from major hubs like Abuja and Lagos (Oshodi) to various destinations across the country will pay only half the usual fare.
