Lagos State Police Command has disclosed that it arrested a Yoruba Nation agitator, Olamilekan Odofin, after over a year on the run.
State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this via a statement on X, adding that the 34-year-old was arrested by officers of Ayobo Division.
Hundeyin explained that the suspect, on January 9, 2023, orchestrated attacks on motorists and the police under the guise of Yoruba Nation agitation.
He stated further that an investigation is ongoing following the arrest.
The PPRO said, “After over a year on the run, 34-year-old Olamilekan Odofin has been arrested by officers of Ayobo Division. The suspect, on January 9, 2023, championed attacks on motorists and the police under the guise of Yoruba Nation agitation. Investigation is ongoing.”
At least one person died, two policemen got injured and some vehicles damaged, during the protest by agitators for the Yoruba nation last year in Ojota, Lagos.
The pro-Yoruba separatist group and the police pointed accusing fingers at each other over who provoked the clash.
The agitators claimed that the police provoked the clash after its men tried to disperse the rally and the agitators refused to heed.
Hundeyin in a statement on X, on Jan.9 2023, while reacting to the incident, wrote, “In the early hours of today, miscreants masquerading as Yoruba Nation Agitators came out in their hundreds, disrupting social and commercial activities at Ojota area of the State.
“A team of police officers, comprising Alausa Division and the Raid Respond Squad promptly stepped in to disperse the unlawful gathering and prevent a breakdown of law and order. The miscreants attacked the police, shooting, and destroyed two vehicles in the process
“One person has been confirmed dead, while two police officers shot by the miscreants are currently receiving treatment. Four suspects have been arrested and investigations have commenced.
“Meanwhile, normalcy has been restored to the area. Lagosians are urged to go about their lawful businesses as measures have been put in place to prevent further breakdown of law and order; and keen monitoring of the situation continues.
“It is imperative to state unequivocally that the Lagos State Police Command will not allow any person or group of persons, under whatever guise, disrupt the peace currently enjoyed in the State.”
