The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to prioritise their health and support one another in the ongoing battle against cancer.
She stressed the importance of creating awareness, early detection, and ensuring fair access to treatment for everyone.
The President’s wife made this appeal in her message to mark the 2025 World Cancer Day, highlighting the devastating impact of cancer on countless lives in Nigeria and across the world.
World Cancer Day, observed every February 4, seeks to raise global awareness on cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment while striving to reduce the burden of the disease.
“As we observe World Cancer Day today, we are reminded of the burden cancer places on millions of individuals and families in Nigeria, and around the globe,” she said.
Senator Tinubu noted that this year’s theme, ‘United by Unique’, focuses on the significance of personalised cancer care, emphasising the need to tailor treatments to meet the specific needs of each patient.
“This year’s theme: ‘United by Unique’ emphasises the significance of adapting cancer treatments to cater to the unique needs of each individual. This day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to combat this global health challenge,” she stated.
The First Lady further highlighted that cancer remains one of Nigeria’s leading causes of death but expressed optimism that, with dedication and collaboration, the situation can be changed for the better.
She urged Nigerians to take proactive measures such as undergoing regular health screenings and adopting early detection practices to improve survival rates.
“In Nigeria, cancer remains a leading cause of death, but with determination and partnership, we can change this narrative. Every individual, regardless of their socio-economic status, deserves the opportunity to live a healthy life, free from the devastating impact of cancer,” she added.
Reaffirming her commitment to initiatives aimed at promoting cancer awareness and improving access to treatment, the First Lady called on healthcare professionals, government agencies, and the general public to join hands in the fight against the disease.
“Let us continue to unite and raise awareness about cancer, prioritise screening, early detection and equitable access to treatment for all. I urge all Nigerians to prioritise their health and support one another in our collective fight against this disease. May God protect us all,” she stated.
