The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revoked the land title of the Peoples Democratic Party’s national secretariat in Abuja over the party’s failure to pay ground rent for 20 years.
In a revocation notice dated March 13, 2025, and signed by the Director of Land Administration, Chijioke Nwankwoeze, the FCT Administration cited non-compliance with land regulations as the reason for the decision.
The letter addressed to the opposition party stated, “The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory has, in the exercise of powers conferred on him under the Land Use Act No. 6 of 1978, Cap. L5, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, revoked your rights, interests, and privileges over Plot No. 243 within the Central Area, Cadastral Zone A00, Abuja.”
It further noted that the PDP had defaulted on ground rent payments from January 1, 2006, to January 1, 2025, despite multiple reminders through national newspapers and electronic media since 2023.
“You would please note that the said breaches by PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP), NATIONAL SECRETARIAT (MISC 81346) run contrary to the provisions of Section 28, Subsection 5 (a) and (b) of the Land Use Act,” the notice added.
The minister stated that the FCTA would take immediate possession of the property until the outstanding debts were cleared.
The revocation comes amid heightened political tensions, with Wike, a former PDP governor of Rivers State, now serving in the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration.
