The Minister of the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has approved the allocation of N13.1 billion in 2024 to fund the refurbishment, construction of new bathrooms, and provision of furniture in secondary and primary schools across the Six Area Councils.
The Mandate Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration Education Secretariat, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, disclosed this information on Wednesday at a year-end media briefing in Abuja.
The targeted funds, according to his statement, would be split among the Councils based on the specific needs of their school projects.
The education secretary noted that the minister had declared his commitment to completing all projects by 2024.
Hayyo said, “The FCT minister, known as Mr Project, approved new constructions, renovations or rehabilitation, furniture provision, and toilet construction in FCT secondary and primary schools totaling over N13 billion.”
“While we pledge that all projects will be completed by 2024, we will not disclose how many schools will be renovated or built in each Area Council of the FCT because the school needs of the Area Councils are not equal.”
“Some Area Councils have higher demands because there are so many dilapidated and overcrowded classrooms. We all know how the present FCT minister modified the phase of education in Rivers state; it is the same method that he is going to do in the Federal Capital Territory, and that is why he has approved the money for the school projects”
Hayyo indicated that the Education Secretariat held training sessions for secondary education board staff in London from January to December 2023.
The focus of these workshops was on British Education Training Technology, with the goal of improving the skills and knowledge of the participants.
The training project was created to keep up with the changing world of education technology, giving secondary school board staff new insights and tools.
Other trainings he mentioned includes the international training on innovation/entrepreneurship, training of school librarians in e-library, training of teachers in Computer Based Test, online training of 80 English teachers by the British council, training of 96 members of the School-Based Management Committee and many others.
Meanwhile, Hayyo summoned the staff of the secretariat to be committed to achieving positive results and not to be deterred by challenges.
