The Special Assistant to the Oyo State Governor on Information and Communications Technology and E-Governance, Mr. Bayo Akande, has revealed why the Oyo State Government has mandated all Okada riders in the State to go for a biometric capturing.
According to The Nation, the aide to Governor Seyi Makinde explained that the motive behind the decision of the Oyo State government is to account for all Okada riders in the State.
He stated that against the idea of banning Okada riders’ movement in the State, the biometrics capturing will enable the State government to regulate their activities across all the local government areas of the State.
“We are registering everybody, even Okada riders. As far as Okada riders are concerned, His Excellency, the Governor, was very concerned; he felt that as opposed to banning them outright as we have seen in other states, how about we just carry out identity management and regulate their activities, you know, have their biometrics; knowing who owns the okada, give them jackets and then weed out the bad eggs from the good ones?” he stated.
He also revealed that the State Government will ban defaulters from operating in the State.
“We are still in the registration phase but we do have a deadline that has been communicated to the Okada riders’ associations. If you have not registered by then, you would no longer be allowed to operate in Oyo State,” he added.
