Popular Afrobeats singer, Seun Anikulapo Kuti, better known as Seun Kuti, has explained why he does not go to church to worship but do ‘juju’ instead.
Seun Kuti gave this explanation while speaking SpillwithPhyna in a podcast, adding what he does is juju.
He said as an African you have to embrace Africa tradition and you do not need to go to church as there are shrines in every house and our god is everywhere all the time.
“I don’t go to church. I do Juju. If you offend me I will do Juju for you. Abi no be juju they called African spiritual system? Everybody in Africa should embrace Africa tradition. Our god is with us all the time everywhere we go. We don’t need to go to church. There is no particular spot to worship, everyone has shrines in the house to praise and worship their ancestors. That is the starting point for the family.
Speaking on why some stopped going to church since Pope Francis said they can bless same-sex couples, the Afrobeats singer said, “What I will tell Nigerians is that you cannot change the Pope or change Mohammed. Christianity is not our religion and if the people that have the religion say this is what they want you have succumbed just follow them.
“They came to Africa enslaved your ancestors and killed them you were not annoyed you continue go to church, now they talk about blessing of same-sex marriage you are now provoked. This is their property you can’t change how to do their things. It is only Africa we allow them to dictate how to do our things for us. Africans can only be annoyed but they can’t change the situation.
“They still have everything they still have everything they still from Africa, gold money and ancestral things which some were used to decorate the Vatican city. It was Pope that bless the first slave ship”
Seun kuti, while noting that they are pioneers of Christianity in this part of the world, explained that “my grandfathers started Christianity in this part of Africa if you look back at it. We are part of the pioneers. We have been there. We done that and moved on and we hope Africans can follow suit.
He pointed out that there is one question he always asked when people try to preach to him, “O Seun you have to give your to Christ, then I would ask, do you have bank account, they would say yes, if you get bank account like me anywhere I go when I die is where you will go.
“Because to believe in Jesus Christ it is not to believe in a man or personality. Following this, there is doctrine behind it. You must believe in restoration and bells and you must believe Jesus Christ is coming back now.
He added, “Christianity and Islam are religion of now. Everything is based on the philosophy that everything will end now. Jesus Christ is coming back now, you must believe it, if you don’t believe that Jesus Christ is coming back now you are not a real Christian. But all of you that believe that Jesus is coming back now and you have bank account for tomorrow that means you believe Jesus is coming back now.
The Nigerian Afrobeats singer, however, stated that it is only the poor that will enter the kingdom of God.
“Poor people are the only one that will go to heaven. In Nigerian for instance, only 48 million have bank accounts. This was made known during the COVID-19 pandemic during the argument on how to share palliatives. So, the country is so holy. Many people that will go to heaven will come from Nigeria because they have passed the first criteria. They are living in the now. If everything scatter now they are there. We the 48 million that have bank accounts, we are in the same group, we are going nowhere”, he asserted.
While observing that church has been commercialised, Seun Kuti said, “The way Church is being structured is based on business against What Jesus Christ preached. That is why Catholics are living pius live like not marrying, live in church property. But did you find out why Pope Benedict XVI resigned from the church? The first Pope that resigned his from his position in 2000 years. Yes he resigned based on financial irregularities.”
