The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be the 22nd running of the FIFA World Cup competition.
The quadrennial international men’s football championship is contested by the senior national teams of the member associations of FIFA.
It is scheduled to take place in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December 2022. This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world.
In addition, the tournament is scheduled to be the last with a 32-team. Participating teams will be increased to 48 from 2026 tournament. The additional teams will be drawn from the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Here are some interesting facts you need to know about the Stadium 947, one of the stadiums to be used during the tournament:
1.Stadium 974 will play host to seven 2022 World Cup matches, up to the Round of 16 stage.
2. The stadium is one of the eight being converted for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022.
3. The Stadium was named after number of containers used to build it and Qatar’s international dialling code ‘947’.
4. Previously known as Ras Abu Aboud, Stadium 974 will be inaugurated during the Arab Cup which kickstarts on November 30, 2021. The stadium will host the match between Syria and UAE on the opening day and will host a total of six matches during the tournament.
5. Stadium 974 will play hosts to seven 2022 World Cup matches, up to the Round of 16 stage.
6. Stadium 974, quite interestingly, can be fully dismantled after use and is the first fully demountable stadium in the history of World Cups.
7. Stadium 974 will be the only World Cup venue which will not have the cooling technology. It is naturally ventilated due to its design and location very close to the sea front.
8. Given that there is no need for cooling tech, combined with the stadium’s efficient design, means water use at the venue has been reduced by almost 40 per cent.
9. The stadium has capacity of 40,000 seats.
10. After the World Cup tournament, the shipping containers and seats used by the stadium will later be dismantled and provided as assistance to other under-developed countries in the world.
