The citizens of Niger Republic have taken to the streets to stage a protest against Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu.
In an online video, the Nigeriens were seen in cars and on foot with placards and a banner having the image of Tinubu on it, and demonstrating hatred towards the image.
This development is coming on the heels of the mission sent to Niger by Tinubu, who is the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The mission were sent to negotiate with the military Junta in the country to out an end to the military coup recently plotted against the president, Mohamed Bazoum.
The first delegation, led by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), met with the coupists and other parties in Niger. Another delegation led by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe engaged with the leaders of Libya and Algeria.
Earlier on July 26, members of the presidential guard had cut off the presidential palace in the capital Niamey and blocked Bazoum inside, sparking regional and international concern about instability in a country that is a pivotal ally for Western powers helping fight an insurgency in the Sahel region.
Bazoum was still being held inside the presidential palace on Thursday, July 27, Massoudou said in an interview with French broadcaster France 24. The minister’s whereabouts were unclear.
On Friday, July 28, the military Junta led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, declared a coup in the country on national television, ousting president Bazoum.
Following this development, the military coup plotters in Mali, Burkina Faso allied against ECOWAS.
In an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Sunday, July 30, the ECOWAS issued a 7-day ultimatum warning to Tchiani to
surrender power to the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
