An elderly man on Monday broke down in tears in a bank because he couldn’t withdraw money from his account as a result of naira scarcity in the country.
In a viral video on social media the man stated that he was unable to purchase drugs or food because he couldn’t access the cash in his bank account.
Speaking in Yoruba, he said, “ I have not eaten since this morning, when it is not that I did not have my money… The person that sells drugs said that he will not sell drugs for me if I don’t bring money.
When it is not that I don’t have my money”.
Meanwhile, Nigerians reacted to the post reflecting current economic realities in the country.
@ Ogoke Nadlx commented that “Later he will still vote for APC, because the candidates is from his tribe… He will still vote for Tinubu
Hunger knows no tribe”
@ Olarewanju Abdulaziz oladayo said “What a country. Everybody wey have hand in this scarcity will not end well insha Allah.🥲”
@ Archigram said “What of his debit/ATM card?”
Naira scarcity
Nigerians have faced untold hardship on non-availability of New naira note.
The National Council of State tasked the Central Bank of Nigeria to make the new Naira notes available or recirculate the old Naira notes to ease the current suffering of Nigerians.
The CBN had in October 2022 announced the redesign of N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, and asked Nigerians to deposit their old notes before January 31, 2023 when they would cease to be legal tender.
The deadline was shifted to February 10 following difficulties obtaining the new notes.
Thereafter, governors of Kaduna, Zamfara and Kogi states dragged the federal government and the CBN to the Supreme Court over the time limit, and the court gave an interim order suspending the February 10 deadline.
