The United States has announced its decision to allow its Western allies to supply advanced fighter jets, including American-made F-16s, to Ukraine.
The announcement came from national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, who revealed that President Joe Biden informed his G7 counterparts of the decision during the bloc’s summit in Japan on Friday.
This move not only marks a major boost for Kyiv but also showcases the United States’ commitment to Ukraine’s self-defense.
The US troops will provide training to Ukrainian pilots to effectively utilize the advanced jets, strengthening Ukraine’s air capabilities.
The decision also paves the way for other nations to send their existing stocks of F-16s to Ukraine, as long as it is approved by the US.
Ukraine has long sought advanced fighter jets to aid its ongoing fight against Russia. President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the US decision as a “historic one” and expressed gratitude for the support.
He emphasized that these fighter jets would greatly enhance Ukraine’s air power and contribute to the country’s defense.
While no government has confirmed the immediate provision of advanced fighter jets to Kyiv, the US, and its allies have been focusing on supplying Ukraine with the necessary systems, weapons, and training required for offensive operations this spring and summer.

UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, tweeted about the cooperation among these nations, highlighting their determination to meet Ukraine’s needs. Denmark has also announced its ability to support pilot training but has not confirmed if it will send jets.
The introduction of modern fighter jets such as the F-16 would allow Ukraine to strike behind Russian lines, enhancing its capabilities against Moscow’s significantly larger air force.
With Russia’s invasion and Ukraine’s urgent requirement for advanced aircraft, support from Western allies is crucial in maintaining a strong defense.
