The United States has imposed sanctions on former Lebanon central bank governor, Riad Salameh, and four others, citing their involvement in corrupt practices that have contributed to Lebanon’s rule of law breakdown.
The U.S. Treasury Department’s move, followed by a similar action by the United Kingdom, highlights concerns over financial improprieties.
Salameh’s alleged misuse of power to enrich himself and associates through complex financial dealings has raised serious legal questions.
The department said in a statement; “Salameh abused his position of power, likely in violation of Lebanese law, to enrich himself and his associates by funneling hundreds of millions of dollars through layered shell companies to invest in European real estate.”
