The United Nations Children’s Fund has provided essential solar power equipment to 30 schools in Kano State, spanning 11 local government areas.
Among the distributed items are 120 solar panels, 60 batteries, 30 solar inverters, and 30 charge regulators, which will benefit both primary schools and integrated Islamiyya Schools.
The Director of Public Enlightenment at the Kano State Ministry of Education,Balarabe Kiru, shared this information in an official statement on Wednesday.
UNICEF’s efforts to enhance learning access for school pupils in Kano have included the recent distribution of tablets to 65 primary schools under the Nigeria Learning Passport program.
During the handover of these vital resources to the state’s education ministry UNICEF’s Chief Field Officer in Kano, Raham Rahul, emphasized that this donation aligns with UNICEF’s commitment to extending learning opportunities through a dedicated online platform for children as part of the Nigeria Learning Passport initiative.
“Nigeria Learning Passport is a digital learning platform that offers curriculum-designed content for early childhood education, primary and secondary education, adolescent skills and technology/vocational education.
“The programme, therefore, responds to the needs of both in and out-of-school children and youth who need additional support to receive education of sufficient quality,” he said.
Rahul observed that the state’s access to and utilisation of the learning passport remained inadequate, emphasising the necessity for the state to achieve a goal of 75,000 subscribers and users by December.
The state Commissioner of Education, Umar Doguwa, expressed gratitude for the donation on behalf of the ministry. He emphasised the ministry’s commitment to establishing a robust monitoring team to oversee the appropriate utilisation of the items in the recipient schools. The Commissioner’s remarks were delivered by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Hajiya Kubra Imam.
