The United Nations said on Tuesday that years of educational disruption have made it difficult for Ukrainian children to learn language, numeracy and reading skills in the wake of the epidemic and Russia’s invasion.
According to UNICEF, the UN organisation for children, children in Ukraine and refugees compelled to move abroad are now facing a fourth year of disruption.
According to regional director of UNICEF for Europe and Central Asia, Regina De Dominicis many of Ukraine’s 6.7 million children aged three to 18 are finding it difficult to learn because of ongoing attacks on education inside the country and poor enrolment rates in nations that are hosting refugees.
She saw extensive learning loss, including decrease in Ukrainian language abilities, reading, and maths, after touring the country.
“Inside Ukraine, attacks on schools have continued unabated, leaving children deeply distressed and without safe spaces to learn,” De Dominicis said.
“Not only has this left Ukraine’s children struggling to progress in their education, but they are also struggling to retain what they learnt when their schools were fully functioning.”
