Uganda boosted their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a crucial 1-0 victory over Guinea at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala on Tuesday.
The Cranes responded strongly after their disappointing 3-1 loss to Mozambique in the previous match, securing all three points on home soil.
Guinea, on the other hand, arrived in Kampala looking to recover from a frustrating goalless draw against bottom-placed Somalia, a result that had already put a dent in their qualification ambitions.
The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Allan Okello stepped up and delivered a stunning curling free-kick past Guinea’s goalkeeper, Soumaïla Sylla, nestling the ball into the bottom right corner.
Despite Guinea’s persistent search for an equalizer, Uganda’s defense stood resolute to preserve their lead.
With this win, Uganda remains third in Group G with nine points from six matches, trailing leaders Algeria and second-placed Mozambique by three points, as both teams sit at the top with 12 points each.
Guinea’s defeat pushed them down to fourth place with six points, putting them level with Botswana, who sit in fifth, while Somalia remains at the bottom with a single point.
The Cranes will now aim to build on this momentum as they prepare for the next round of qualifiers, keeping their World Cup dreams alive.
