Memphis Police has suspended another officer, Preston Hemphill, who was the sixth officer and a member of the disbanded SCORPION unit, a special unit of the Memphis Police, created to tackle crime, around Memphis neighbourhood.
Hemphill, who was suspended from work, due to his alleged involvement, in connection with Nichols’ brutal attack, which led to his death was relieved off his work with pay, on Monday, pending the time, investigation will be fully conducted into the matter.
According to the legal counsel, representing Hemphill, Lee Gerald, he said Hemphill was not present at the second location, where Nichols was beaten and eventually died.
According to Gerald, during an interview with Times, he claimed that Hemphill was only present for the traffic stop but he was not present at the second scene where Nichols was beaten.
According to him, “he was never present at the second scene.’
Protesters have been calling for police reform across the country , ever since the videos of the incident was released by the department of police, on Friday.
However, in one of the videos released by the Memphis Police department, an officer was seen, using taser on Nichols while others were held him down and according to a report by WHBQ that, Hemphill was the officer using Taser on Nichols.
Tyre Nichols died on January 10, three days after he was brutally pounded by the Memphis Police, at a traffic stop in Memphis, US.
