The Gombe State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of two children following a stampede at the Gombe main Eid Ground.
The State Police Command’s Spokesperson, Buhari Abdullahi, disclosed the incident in a statement on Sunday, revealing that the stampede occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m., just after the conclusion of Eid prayers.
According to Abdullahi, the chaos ensued at the exit gate due to limited access points, as a massive crowd, mostly women and children, rushed to leave the venue.
“The stampede was caused by inadequate exit access, as a large crowd, primarily women and children, rushed to leave the venue. The situation, worsened by intense heat, led to the unfortunate incident,” he stated.
Authorities reported that 22 individuals sustained injuries and were promptly transported to hospitals for medical attention.
“Regrettably, two of the victims, a four-year-old boy and six-month-old baby girl, were pronounced dead by doctors while receiving treatment,” Abdullahi added.
He extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished those injured a swift recovery.
The police further advised managers of the Eid Ground to ensure that all entrance and exit gates remain accessible to allow smooth movement, particularly after prayers.
“The police urge Eid Ground managers to ensure that all entrance and exit gates remain open to facilitate smooth movement, especially after prayers,” Abdullahi advised.
