A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday in the Oshodi area of Lagos when a train fatally struck a 50-year-old man known only as Emmanuel.
The accident occurred close to Arena Shopping Mall, a busy hub in Oshodi.
Reports revealed that Emmanuel’s sister, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, received a distressing phone call around 9 a.m., informing her that her older brother had been killed by an oncoming train.
This sudden tragedy has left the family in shock and disbelief.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the event in an official statement.
He revealed that the Mosafejo Division was notified of the accident at about 1:33 p.m., prompting an immediate dispatch of detectives to the scene.
“The scene was visited and photographed by a team of detectives,” Hundeyin stated. The deceased’s body was then taken to a public morgue, where an autopsy will be conducted.
Hundeyin also noted that the investigation had been handed over to the Railway Police Command based in Ebute Metta, who will continue to probe the exact circumstances leading to the fatal collision.
Though the details surrounding Emmanuel’s death remain unclear, this is not an isolated incident in Lagos.
In a similar occurrence back in August, a man was crushed to death by a train in the Mushin area while walking along the railway tracks at Cappa around 6 p.m. that evening.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency responded swiftly to the Mushin incident. Its spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, confirmed that the victim had sustained fatal injuries from the impact, dying instantly at the scene.
These recurring tragedies have raised concerns about public safety around railway lines in Lagos, prompting authorities to urge more caution near train tracks to prevent future accidents.
